JROCers,
I wanted to extend a sincere and humble thank you to all of you for the very successful $20k for 20 years fundraiser we kicked off last year. In February 2017, JROC turned 20 years old and kicked off our Twenty For Twenty fundraiser. At last count, we have raised a total of $24,612.44, surpassing our goal by almost 25%! This, in many ways is due in part to your generous donations, volunteer work, and participation in our events, so we wanted to say THANK YOU!
So far, using funds raised in this fundraiser, we have funded the construction plans for a universal accessibility ramp at Huguenot Flatwater, which will open up large portions of the James River to paddlers of all physical abilities! While there will still be a huge fundraising campaign for the actual construction costs, funding the construction plans puts us in a solid footing when it comes to fundraising and construction. Regardless, that’s not where these funds will stop giving back to the park. We have already started the process of modifying the water fountain at Reedy Creek to be year round (yes, that means water in the winter!). Also, as you may be well aware, we continue to carry out monthly work projects with the effort to maintain and improve our park!
To provide a snapshot of recent projects, funds and volunteer labor have gone into the following projects:
- Removing literally 1 ton of trash from Vauxhall Island
- Replacing the fence around the Reedy Creek parking lot
- Repairing climbing access to improve safety at the Belle Isle Rock Quarry
- A pop-up trash clean up of the Kanawah Canal in the summer
- Did emergency repairs and trash clean up at Pump House
- Constructed bump outs on the boardwalk at Wetlands
We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and inform you of it’s impacts that have already occurred. We are so lucky to have such an involved community, and sincerely appreciate all that you bring to JROC and the broader outdoor community! Thank you, and of course, we hope to see you in the park!
-Will
