Yesterday we celebrated the independence of our country. We gathered with friends, family, that one guy who shows up at parties that no one knows, and celebrated this fine land by blowing up small parts of it. Like many of you, I spent my Fourth of July floating on the James River enjoying our wonderful James River Park System. Judging by the traffic jams and packed parking lots it was possibly a record setting day of attendance in the park. That is a fantastic thing. The James River and our urban wilderness park are the heart of Richmond. Right now it needs our help. Most people know and follow the Leave No Trace principle. Simply stated:
- Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
- Dispose of Waste Properly
- Leave What You Find
- Minimize Campfire Impacts
- Respect Wildlife
- Be Considerate of Other Visitors
JROC is hosting a popup cleanup this Saturday at 10am at Pony Pasture to help cleanup along the James River. If partying on the James is part of your July 4th tradition, come out and help keep the park pristine and in great shape for your next adventure. If you can’t make it out, please consider donating to one of these fine support groups:
- JROC ( shameless plug )
- Friends of James River Park
- James River Association
- Friends of Pump House
