December Meeting Minutes

    • KOTJ Insurance will be refunded

  • Huguenot Flatwater
    • Numbers haven’t changed
    • Construction has to be delayed a year
    • Fall construction window doesn’t open until November
    • delays due to city procurement / env issues / summer peak season
    • Need to communicate delay to donors
    • MMPF is aware of delay / not a problem
    • Can funds be invested to offset increase in costs?
    • Reaching out to representatives in city
    • new banner for HFW area
    • possibly start formal written campaign to push project forward
    • update website with info regarding delay
  • December Work Project
    • 12/12 @ 9am to 12pm at Tredegar parking lot
    • Greg and Matt Mason to meet to review work to be completed
    • Invasive species remediation on Tredegar St to restore viewshed and stairs
    • 25 person limit on volunteers due to COVID limits
    • Can spread out volunteers
    • Bring leather work gloves and sturdy shoes
    • people will be sent to Belle Isle to cleanup there
  • Gifts For Hillcrest
    • 5 on each side
    • Hambrick books as a gifts & poinsettia
    • up to $400 approved for gifts
  • Growing Our Community / Philosophy
    • Will polled membership
    • overall feeling is to keep JROC as a worker bee in the park
    • variability of how much fund raising we do to support projects
    • Want to be an inclusive group that represents diverse users
    • Getting back to roots of work projects
    • JROC recognizes we are a homogenous group
      • highly focused on whitewater community
      • diversity of sports / activities could lead to greater membership diversity
    • JROC created to engage community when park did not have the budget
    • engage with people in the park
    • people don’t know how to get involved with JROC
    • Setup at First Break and teach people how to safely navigate rapids around the area?
    • Help people potentially conquer fear of water
    • Education around the cleanliness and pollution levels in the James
    • Go to group events and tell people about JROC
    • Fisherman have a lot of knowledge to share
  • Safety in the Park / River
    • Working on safety map brochure
      • Should be bi-lingual
      • possibility of a grant
      • Virginia Outdoors Foundation
      • need to find out if JRPS has applied
    • Update park signage to be bi-lingual
    • Inventory & categorize current signs in park
    • Teresa to become Facebook admin to post safety related information
  • Events:
    • KOTJ
      • Sticker added to banner to announce the race is virtual
      • A lot of packets that haven’t been picked up
      • Have until Monday Dec 13th
      • Will mail out packets to out of town racers
      • Shawna willing to do another pickup

      • plastic trees as per Tricia
      • possible to do broader flood cleanup
